In Vedic astrology, a Nakshatra is a lunar mansion — one of twenty-seven segments into which the visible path of the Moon is traditionally divided. Each segment spans thirteen degrees and twenty minutes, and the Moon passes through roughly one Nakshatra each day. The Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at the moment of a person's birth is called the Janma Nakshatra, or birth star.
The system is older than the twelve-sign zodiac in Indian usage, and it remains central to panchang calculation, muhurta selection and naming ceremonies. Every Nakshatra is traditionally assigned a presiding deity and a ruling planet, and it is that planetary rulership that connects a Nakshatra to a particular Mukhi Rudraksha.
Because the Moon moves quickly, birth time and birth place matter. Two people born on the same calendar date, a few hours apart or in different cities, can fall in different Nakshatras. This is also why two people who share a Sun sign may have entirely different birth stars, and therefore different traditionally recommended beads.
According to Jyotish traditions the Moon represents the mind — its steadiness, its moods and its inclinations. That is why lunar position, rather than solar position, is the basis of Nakshatra selection in classical Indian practice. None of this is presented here as scientifically proven; it is offered as living tradition.

Nakshatra is one traditional method. Purpose, personal preference, Rashi and a practitioner's reading of the full chart are equally common. If the methods point to different beads, many wearers begin with the universally worn 5 Mukhi and add a second bead after a consultation.
