Understanding Shaligram respectfully
Shaligram Shila occupies a distinct place in Vaishnava practice. These dark, naturally marked stones are traditionally collected from the Gandaki river region of Nepal and worshipped as a form of Bhagwan Vishnu. The names used for individual forms—such as Narayan, Narsimha, Varaha, Matsya or Sudarshan—come from traditional readings of shape, openings, ridges and chakra-like impressions.
Those names are devotional classifications rather than scientific grades. Natural stones vary considerably, and honest selection depends on clear photographs, dimensions, weight and a careful description of what is actually visible. Mauhurtika distinguishes naturally formed Shilas from murtis carved from Shaligram stone and avoids promising guaranteed worldly or medical outcomes.
A Shaligram is generally chosen for worship rather than decoration. Families may follow their own sampradaya or guru's method. For a simple daily practice, a clean altar, plain water and Tulsi are customary. Seekers who are uncertain about a form or ritual can request guidance before buying.
Natural Shila
Naturally shaped and marked in the river environment. Its individuality should be documented with exact-piece photographs.
Carved Murti
A devotional form carved from natural Shaligram stone. It must be described as carved rather than presented as naturally shaped.
Simple care
Rinse with plain water, dry gently and keep on a clean altar or in a soft pouch. Avoid soap, detergent, perfume and abrasive polishing. Handle carved details carefully.
Shaligram questions
What is a Shaligram?
A Shaligram is a naturally formed sacred stone traditionally found in the Gandaki river region of Nepal and worshipped as a representation of Bhagwan Vishnu in many Hindu traditions.
Are Shaligram forms carved?
Traditional Shaligram Shilas are valued for naturally occurring contours and chakra-like impressions. A carved Shaligram murti is a separate product type and should always be identified clearly as carved.
How can I choose a Shaligram?
Choose by the traditional form you follow, the stone's clearly shown natural features and the practical space available in your home altar. If uncertain, seek guidance before ordering.
Will I receive the exact stone shown?
For a natural one-of-one Shaligram, Mauhurtika publishes exact-piece photographs and confirms the piece before dispatch. Shape, markings and weight naturally vary.
How should a Shaligram be cared for?
Keep it on a clean altar, rinse with plain water and wipe it dry. Avoid soap, detergent, perfume and chemical cleaners. Tulsi and plain water are customary offerings.
Does a Shaligram need laboratory certification?
There is no universal laboratory grading standard for a Shaligram's traditional form. Buyers should instead expect clear photographs, measurements, weight, origin disclosure and honest identification of natural or carved pieces.
Can Shaligram be shipped safely?
Yes. Each available piece is cushioned, sealed and sent with tracked delivery under Mauhurtika's published shipping policy.
