How to Clean, Store & Maintain Your Rudraksha — The Complete Care Ritual (2026)

The exact weekly, monthly and annual rituals for cleaning, oiling and storing your Rudraksha to preserve its power and lifespan for 20+ years. Traditional and modern methods, do's and don'ts.

Expert Note

Quick Answer: Clean your Rudraksha weekly with a soft dry cotton cloth. Apply one drop of pure sesame or mustard oil every Monday morning. Store in a wooden or silver puja box lined with red silk. Never use soap, shampoo, alcohol or hot water. A well-maintained genuine Nepali Rudraksha lasts 20-25 years.

A Rudraksha is a living seed. Treat it as sacred and it will serve you for a lifetime; neglect it and its vibration fades within 2-3 years. This guide is the exact maintenance protocol I teach every Mauhurtika customer — refined from Padma Purana instructions and 12 years of hands-on care experience.

The weekly oil ritual — a single drop of pure sesame oil on a soft cotton cloth, gently applied every Monday morning.

Why Rudraksha Needs Care

Rudraksha is the seed of a tropical fruit that in nature would decay in months. What preserves it as a wearable bead is a combination of natural resins, careful drying, and — most importantly — the natural oils absorbed from skin contact and periodic oiling.

Without proper care, four things go wrong:

1. Cracking — dry beads develop hairline cracks that fracture the internal seed compartments

2. Fading — the natural reddish-brown colour dulls to grey

3. Loss of vibration — cracked or damaged beads cannot hold the pran-pratishtha energy

4. Fungal growth — beads stored in humid places develop mould in the mukhi lines

The Complete Care Schedule

Monthly (Purnima)Deep clean with dry soft brushRemove dust from mukhi lines

The Weekly Oil Ritual — Step by Step

What You Need

  • 1 small bottle of pure cold-pressed sesame oil (til ka tel) — first choice
  • OR pure mustard oil — second choice
  • OR almond oil — third choice (for dry climates)
  • A soft, clean, white cotton cloth (never microfiber or synthetic)
  • A small brass or silver plate to rest the bead

The 5-Minute Ritual

1. Remove your Rudraksha on Monday morning after bath

2. Place on brass plate; wipe dry with cotton cloth

3. Put one single drop of sesame oil on the cloth (never directly on bead)

4. Gently massage the bead — including into the mukhi lines — for 30 seconds

5. Wipe off excess oil with a dry corner of the cloth

6. Sprinkle 3-5 drops of Gangajal (Ganges water) on the bead

7. Chant *Om Namah Shivaya* 11 times while holding the bead

8. Wear immediately or store in puja box

Key Point:Do not over-oil. More than a single drop leads to a sticky, dust-attracting bead. Less is more.

The Deep Monthly Clean

On the full moon (Purnima) of each month:

1. Remove the bead from your body or its storage

2. Use a soft dry toothbrush (baby toothbrush works perfectly) to gently brush inside the mukhi lines

3. This removes accumulated dust, dead skin cells and oil residue

4. Wipe clean with cotton

5. Apply weekly oil ritual as usual

6. Place on your puja altar for one full lunar day before wearing again

Storing Your Rudraksha Correctly

Ideal Storage

  • Wooden puja box (sandalwood or teak) lined with red or yellow silk
  • OR a 92.5 silver container with silk lining
  • Kept in your puja room or on a dedicated wooden shelf
  • Ideally facing East or North
  • Away from bathrooms, kitchens, shoes and electronic devices

When Travelling

  • Wear the bead on your body (safest)
  • OR store in a small silk pouch in your carry-on bag (never checked luggage)
  • Never wrap in tissue paper alone — the bead can scratch or dry out

Handling Damage

Minor Chips or Surface Scratches

Acceptable if the internal seed compartments are intact. Continue wearing after the weekly oil ritual to prevent worsening.

Cracks (hairline or full)

A cracked Rudraksha has lost its pran-pratishtha energy and should be respectfully replaced. Do not throw away or discard casually.

Proper Disposal of a Broken Bead

1. Immerse in a flowing river (Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari or any river)

2. OR bury at the base of a peepal, banyan or bilva tree

3. OR return to the ocean if near a coast

4. Never throw in trash, drain or public waste

5. Chant *Om Namah Shivaya* 21 times during immersion

Annual Re-Energisation (Optional but Recommended)

On Mahashivratri each year, perform a full re-consecration:

1. Bathe the bead in a mixture of milk, honey, curd, ghee and sugar (Panchamrit) for 5 minutes

2. Rinse thoroughly with pure water

3. Wipe dry

4. Apply the weekly oil ritual

5. Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra 108 times

6. Place on altar overnight before wearing

Signs Your Rudraksha Needs Extra Care

  • Colour has faded to pale grey — increase oiling to twice weekly
  • Beads feel dry/brittle — soak briefly in warm sesame oil (5 minutes), wipe clean
  • Fungal spots in mukhi lines — deep clean with soft brush and rice flour paste
  • Bead has developed cracks — retire respectfully; get a replacement
  • Silk thread frayed — re-thread immediately; damaged thread can drop the bead

Expert Recommendation

Expert Note

Expert Recommendation: Keep a dedicated "Rudraksha care kit" in your puja room: a small bottle of sesame oil, a clean white cotton cloth reserved only for this purpose, a soft dry baby toothbrush, and a small silver bowl for Gangajal. Investing 5 minutes every Monday in this ritual will preserve your bead's beauty and power for 20+ years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Can I use coconut oil on my Rudraksha?

No. Coconut oil is too heavy and solidifies below 24°C, leaving a sticky residue that traps dust in the mukhi lines. Stick to sesame, mustard or almond oil.

Q.How often should I oil my Rudraksha?

Once a week is ideal — every Monday morning. More frequent oiling makes the bead greasy; less frequent leads to drying and cracking within 6-12 months.

Q.Can I wash my Rudraksha with water?

Yes, plain water is fine (during daily bath is acceptable). Never use soap, shampoo, body wash, or chlorinated water. Always pat dry immediately.

Q.What if my Rudraksha gets accidentally wet with shampoo?

Rinse immediately and thoroughly with clean water. Pat dry. Apply the weekly oil ritual the same day. One-time exposure is not fatal; repeated exposure will strip the bead's natural resins.

Q.How do I know when to replace my Rudraksha?

Replace when: (1) the bead has visible cracks reaching the seed compartments, (2) the natural mukhi lines have worn smooth, (3) the bead has become extremely lightweight (indicating internal decay), or (4) the vibration feels noticeably weaker despite proper care.

Q.Can I keep multiple Rudrakshas in the same box?

Yes, but separate them with silk cloth pieces to prevent scratching. Different mukhis can share a box; different family members' personal beads should be stored separately.

Q.Does sun exposure damage Rudraksha?

Direct harsh afternoon sun for long periods can fade the colour. Early morning sun (15 minutes quarterly) is beneficial and sterilises the bead.

Q.What if I forget to oil my Rudraksha for months?

Give it a deep restoration: soak in warm sesame oil for 15 minutes, gently massage with cotton, wipe clean, and resume the weekly ritual. If severe drying has occurred, this may not fully reverse — prevention is better than cure.
