How to Wear Rudraksha: Vidhi, Mantra, Day and Daily Care (Step-by-Step)

The complete Vedic method for wearing a Rudraksha — purification, Pran-Pratishtha, the right day and muhurat, beej mantras by mukhi, thread vs silver vs gold, and the do's and don'ts that actually matter.

Expert Note

Quick answer: Wear a Rudraksha on a Monday morning after a bath. Purify the bead in Gangajal or raw milk, energise it by chanting Om Namah Shivaya 108 times plus the mukhi's beej mantra, then wear it in red or black thread, silver or gold — around the neck, on the wrist, or as a 108-bead japa mala. Keep it clean, remove it before non-vegetarian food, alcohol and cremation grounds.

The bead is only half the practice. Traditional texts place equal weight on the *vidhi* — the method of purification, energisation and wearing. Here is the complete sequence Mauhurtika's acharyas follow, written so you can do it yourself at home.

Step 1 — Choose the Right Day and Time

OccasionWhy it is chosen
Monday (Somvar)Shiva's day — the default and most recommended
MahashivratriMost auspicious night of the year for Rudraksha
Shravan monthEntire month is Shiva-centred
Pradosh KaalTwilight window sacred to Shiva
Amavasya / PurnimaTraditional for mala initiation

Wear it in the Brahma Muhurta (roughly 4:00–6:00 AM) or before 10 AM after bathing. Avoid starting during an eclipse or in the Sutak period after a death in the family.

Step 2 — Purify the Bead

  • Rinse gently in clean water to remove packing dust.
  • Soak briefly in Gangajal, or in raw cow's milk for 10–15 minutes.
  • Rinse again and pat dry with a soft cotton cloth — never scrub with detergent or a brush.
  • Optionally apply a drop of pure mustard, sandalwood or olive oil and wipe off the excess. This keeps the seed from drying out.
Key Point:Never boil a Rudraksha, never use soap or chemical cleaners, and never leave it soaking overnight in hot water.

Step 3 — Pran-Pratishtha (Energisation)

Sit facing east or north on a clean mat with a lamp lit. Place the bead on a copper plate or a Shiva lingam. Offer water, raw milk, Bilva Patra and white flowers. Then chant, in order:

  • Om Namah Shivaya — 108 times (the universal Rudraksha mantra)
  • The mukhi-specific beej mantra — 21 or 108 times
  • Om Hreem Namah — the general Rudraksha dharan mantra, 11 times

Finish by touching the bead to your forehead and heart, then wear it. If you buy from Mauhurtika, Pran-Pratishtha is performed by our resident acharya before dispatch at no cost — you may still repeat the mantra at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Which day is best to wear a Rudraksha?

Monday morning after a bath. Mahashivratri, Shravan Mondays, Pradosh Kaal, Amavasya and Purnima are also considered highly auspicious.

Q.How do I energise a Rudraksha at home?

Purify it in Gangajal or raw milk, place it before a lamp or Shiva lingam, chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times followed by the mukhi's beej mantra, then wear it.

Q.Can I wear Rudraksha in a black thread?

Yes. Red and black thread are both traditional. Silver and gold capping are equally acceptable.

Q.Should Rudraksha touch the skin?

Yes, direct skin contact is traditional and is believed to help the bead's effect, which is why it is worn at the heart centre.

Q.Can I wear Rudraksha 24 hours a day?

Yes, most people do. Remove it before non-vegetarian meals, alcohol, cremation grounds and heavy chemical exposure such as swimming pools.

Q.Can I sleep wearing a Rudraksha?

It is permitted, but many practitioners remove a heavy pendant or mala at night and keep it under the pillow or in the puja space.

Q.Can I wear Rudraksha while bathing?

Avoid soap and shampoo contact. Plain water is fine; chemical cleaners strip the natural oils and dry out the seed.

Q.How often should I oil my Rudraksha?

Once a month with a drop of mustard, sandalwood or olive oil, wiping off the excess with a soft cloth.

Q.What mantra should I chant while wearing Rudraksha?

Om Namah Shivaya is universal. Add the mukhi-specific beej mantra — for example Om Hum Namah for 7 Mukhi — for a targeted practice.

Q.Can someone else wear my Rudraksha?

No. An energised bead is personal. Sharing it is discouraged; gift a freshly energised bead instead.

Q.What should I do if my Rudraksha breaks?

Stop wearing it, keep it respectfully in your puja space or immerse it in flowing water, and wear a newly energised bead.

Q.Do I need a priest to energise my Rudraksha?

No. The home vidhi described above is complete. Mauhurtika also performs Pran-Pratishtha free before dispatch.

Q.How long before I feel the effect of a Rudraksha?

Traditionally 21 to 40 days of continuous wear with regular japa. Effects are described as gradual and cumulative, not instant.

Q.Can I wear more than one Rudraksha?

Yes, if the combination is designed by an astrologer. Randomly combining strong beads such as 1, 11 and 14 Mukhi is discouraged.
